Lip plumpers are all the rage these days as they offer a quick and easy way to add a little oomph to your appearance.

In recent years, celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Kylie Jenner have really drawn attention to the full lip. Lip plumpers are a great way to achieve natural-looking, fuller lips – with extra emphasis on natural – without invasive and expensive medical procedures like lip injections.

There’s no shortage of awesome lip-plumping products on the market. However, if you’re looking for something a little more DIY and budget-friendly, you may want to consider making your own home made lip plumper at home.

I have been doing this for years and love that at-home lip plumpers are not only quick and simple to make but they also save me quite a bit of money. More importantly, I love being able to control the ingredients that I put into it them.

Using natural lip plumping ingredients like coconut oil and essential oils are great natural alternatives to some of the products you’ll find on store shelves and will make you feel good about the products you’re using.

Making your own plumper at home truly is as simple as mixing a few of these natural ingredients together that you likely already have on hand. Easy, right?

I’ve compiled a list of the ingredients you need to make your very own homemade lip plumper below. You can pick and choose which ingredients want to use on any given day to make countless lip plumper recipes the natural way.

Whether you prefer an organic or vegan lip plumper, there is something here for everyone!

How do lip plumper’s work?

Before we get into the key ingredients you’ll need, let’s talk about how lip plumpers work. Lip plumpers are made up of a combination of ingredients that are applied to the lips and are meant to increase blood flow to the area giving them a plump and fuller look.

They are a great option for those who want fuller, more plump lips but are looking for something much less intense (and expensive!) than traditional lip fillers.

There are a variety of different ingredients that are used in commercial lip plumpers, but they all have the same aim of increasing blood flow to the lips. Blood flow is the main thing that causes your lips to appear plump, as it gives them a fuller look and makes them appear larger.

At-home DIY Lip Plumpers

Lip plumpers at home are ridiculously easy to make – trust me. They typically are made up of only two components; a base (or moisturizer) and an “active” ingredient like essential oils.

You can pick and choose your base and active ingredient from the lists below and simply mix them in a small container – it’s as easy as that!

For an even easier DIY lip plumper, I like to add a couple drops of essential oil (most often cinnamon or peppermint) to my favorite lip gloss. This is a great option for when you’re looking for a little bit of fullness without giving up the color of your favorite gloss.

Best Base Moisturizers To Use in Lip Plumpers

Because your lips are constantly exposed to the elements they are especially prone to dryness, so using a good moisturizer is a must!

Lip moisturizers make a great base for a lip plumper and when combined with essential oils can help to renew and hydrate your lips. This gives you the full and “plump” look you’re going for!

  • Coconut Oil – this is a great option as it solidifies at room temperature making it mess-free and easy to apply. It is also likely something you already have in your pantry!
  • Vitamin E Oil – a liquid oil that provides so many benefits for your skin in addition to being incredibly moisturizing.
  • Olive Oil – another ingredient that you likely have on hand but may be a bit messier due to being in a liquid state.
  • Cocoa Butter – this is a great substitute for petroleum jelly or a vaseline-like moisturizer with a delicious chocolate scent. Cocoa butter most often comes in hardened wafers and needs to be melted down in a double boiler prior to mixing with the essential oils. This moisturizer can also be substituted for shea butter.
  • Beeswax – like cocoa butter, beeswax is another solid natural moisturizer that comes in small pellets. It will need to be melted down prior to mixing with the oil of your choice.

Another thing to keep in mind with beeswax is the more you use, the harder (more firm) your lip plumper will be. I recommend mixing beeswax with another liquid base like olive oil, almond oil, or vitamin e oil to keep it solid yet soft.

Best Essential Oils for Lip Plumpers

Most of these essential oils are considered “hot” oils, meaning they may give a tingling sensation when applied to the lips. This mild irritation from the oils is actually what increases blood circulation and flow, causing full and plumper lips.

It’s important to dilute hot oils with a carrier oil to minimize any negative reactions and to keep the sensation from becoming too intense.

You can use just one or multiple of these oils to serve as the active ingredients in your recipe.

  • Peppermint Oil – this is one of the most common and most popular oils to use for lip plumpers as it not only works well but also smells great!
  • Cinnamon Oil – properties in cinnamon oil are known to cause that mild irritation that increases blood flow making this a yummy and effective option as well!
  • Anise Oil – this oil is known for its many health benefits as well as being extremely healing for your skin – lips included.
  • Clove Oil – another hot oil that will produce a warming sensation, resulting in full lips!
  • Wintergreen Oil – It has a similar scent and cooling effect to peppermint oil.

Though I have not personally tried it, cayenne powder has also been shown to be a great alternative to essential oils in lip plumpers and might be one more ingredient that you have on hand!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. If using a hard base like beeswax or solidified coconut oil, begin by melting it over low heat in a double boiler or in the microwave for 20 seconds at a time, stirring in between to ensure the oil doesn’t burn.
  2. Once melted, stir in the essential oil.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before transferring it to the small glass container.

If using a liquid base like Vitamin E oil or olive oil, simply mix the oil in a small bowl with the essential oil(s) and transfer it to a small jar.

I recommend starting with only a couple drops of any essential oil at a time to ensure you don’t have any allergic reactions and your lips will tolerate the strength of the oils well. Of course, it should also be said that you should stay away from using any ingredients you have an allergy to.

It’s important to remember that different oils have different strengths and “heat” so the amount that works well for you with one specific oil may not be the same with the next – and I may or may not be speaking from experience!

DIY Plumping Lip Scrub

Exfoliating your lips with a sugar scrub can also make them appear more plump!

Exfoliating is especially necessary to prevent dry lips as it removes dead skin cells while improving blood circulation to the lips.

It may also stimulate collagen production, all of which can make your lips appear more full, smooth, and hydrated – another completely safe and natural plumping effect.

Making your own natural lip scrub is so easy! Simply mix equal parts sugar with olive oil or coconut oil and then add in a couple drops of essential oils – I love a few drops of peppermint oil in lip scrubs for the cooling effect it provides.

Gently massage the scrub onto your lips in circular motions. You can use your fingers or a small scrub brush.

Leave the scrub on your lips for up to 5 minutes before rinsing with cold water. I like to do this once or twice a week and follow it up with my DIY lip plumper.
